Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee granules

Instructions

  • Whip the Heavy Cream:
    • Begin by pouring 1 cup of heavy cream into a large mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream on high speed until stiff peaks form. This will take about 2-3 minutes.
    • Note for beginners: To check if the whipped cream is ready, turn the mixer off and lift the beaters out of the bowl. If the whipped cream holds its shape without falling over, you’ve reached stiff peaks!
  • Whip the Cream Cheese:
    • In a separate mixing bowl, add the 1 cup of softened cream cheese. Beat it with an electric mixer on medium speed until it becomes soft and smooth. This will only take about 1-2 minutes.
    • Note: It’s important that the cream cheese is softened before using it. If it’s too cold, it will be harder to mix smoothly, and you may end up with lumps in your mousse.
  • Add Powdered Sugar:
    • Gradually add 2 cups of powdered sugar to the whipped cream cheese. Beat on medium speed until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and well-combined. The sugar will help stabilize the mousse and add sweetness.
  • Mix in the Instant Coffee:
    • Add the 2 tablespoons of instant coffee granules to the cream cheese and powdered sugar mixture. Beat until the coffee is completely dissolved and well incorporated into the creamy mixture.
    • Tip: If you prefer a stronger coffee flavor, feel free to add more coffee granules to taste. You can always adjust the flavor based on your preferences.
  • Fold in the Whipped Cream:
    • Now, gently fold in the whipped heavy cream into the coffee-cream cheese mixture. Start by adding about a third of the whipped cream and folding it in with a spatula until it’s well mixed.
    • Continue folding in the rest of the whipped cream until the mousse is smooth and fluffy. Be careful not to deflate the whipped cream; you want to keep as much air as possible to ensure the mousse remains light and airy.
  • Spoon or Pipe into Serving Bowls:
    • Once everything is well mixed, spoon the mousse into individual serving bowls or glasses. You can also use a piping bag for a more elegant presentation.
    • Refrigerate the mousse for at least 1-2 hours, or until it’s firm and chilled.

Notes

  • Softened Cream Cheese: Always make sure your cream cheese is softened before starting. You can leave it out at room temperature for about 30 minutes, or if you’re in a hurry, microwave it for 10-15 seconds to soften it quickly.
  • Whipping Cream: If you don’t have an electric mixer, you can still make this mousse by whipping the cream by hand, but it will take longer and require more effort. A handheld whisk works best for this.
  • Don’t Overmix: When folding in the whipped cream, be gentle. Overmixing will cause the mousse to lose its fluffy texture, so fold slowly until it’s just combined.
  • Add Flavor Variations: If you want to get creative, you can add chocolate shavings, a drizzle of caramel, or a dash of cinnamon on top of the mousse. These will enhance the flavor and add a decorative touch.
  • For a Vegan Option: To make this mousse vegan, substitute the cream cheese with vegan cream cheese and use coconut cream in place of the heavy cream. Make sure to check that the powdered sugar is vegan as well.
