This Ground Beef Orzo is a simple, flavorful one-pan meal perfect for busy weeknights. Creamy tomato sauce, tender orzo, and savory ground beef make a satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 ½ cups orzo pasta
  • 2 ½ cups beef broth
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  • Cook Ground Beef and Onion: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 lb ground beef and 1 finely diced onion. Cook for 6-8 minutes, breaking up the beef, until browned and softened. This creates the savory base.
  • Add Garlic and Seasonings: Add 2 minced garlic cloves and cook for 1-2 minutes. Stir in 1 tbsp tomato paste, salt, black pepper, and ½ tsp red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for 1-2 minutes to enhance flavor. This infuses the dish with aromatic flavors.
  • Add Tomatoes and Broth: Pour in 1 (14 oz) can crushed tomatoes and 2 ½ cups beef broth. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer. This creates the tomato broth base.
  • Add Orzo and Cook: Add 1 ½ cups orzo to the skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cover. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. This cooks the orzo in the flavorful broth.
  • Add Heavy Cream: Stir in 1 cup heavy cream and let simmer for 2-3 minutes until creamy. Adjust seasoning as needed. This creates the creamy tomato sauce.
  • Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese over the dish and garnish with fresh basil. Serve warm. This adds the finishing touches.

Notes

  • Use a large skillet for even cooking.
  • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste.
  • Add vegetables for extra nutrients.
  • Garnish generously with fresh basil.
