Craving a quick, easy, and seriously delicious weeknight dinner? This Korean Ground Beef Bowl is your answer! Savory ground beef, fragrant with garlic and ginger, served over fluffy rice – it’s a flavor explosion in a bowl.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari)
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, cucumber, kimchi, pickled vegetables, fried egg
  • Optional ingredients: bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, spinach

Instructions

Prepare the Rice (Choose your preferred method):

  • Stove Method: Rinse 1 cup of rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This crucial step removes excess starch and helps prevent the rice from becoming sticky. Combine the rinsed rice with 2 cups of water in a medium-sized pot. Bring the water to a rolling boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the pot tightly, and simmer for approximately 15 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed by the rice. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit (covered) for 5 minutes before fluffing the rice gently with a fork. Beginner Note: Resist the temptation to lift the lid while the rice is simmering! This will release steam and can result in unevenly cooked rice.
  • Rice Cooker: Add the rinsed rice and water to your rice cooker, close the lid securely, and let it cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Beginner Note: A rice cooker is an invaluable kitchen tool for consistently perfect rice. It takes all the guesswork out of the process.
  • Instant Pot: Combine the rinsed rice and water in the inner pot of your Instant Pot. Seal the lid and cook on high pressure for 3 minutes. Allow for a natural pressure release for 10 minutes, then carefully release any remaining pressure. Fluff the rice with a fork. Beginner Note: The Instant Pot is a fantastic way to cook rice quickly and efficiently, especially on busy weeknights.

Cook the Ground Beef:

  1. Brown the Beef: In a large skillet (a cast-iron skillet works particularly well) over medium-high heat, add the ground beef. Use a spatula or a spoon to break the beef apart as it cooks. Brown the beef until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Beginner Note: Don’t overcrowd the pan, as this will cause the beef to steam rather than brown. If necessary, cook the beef in batches to ensure even browning.
  2. Add Flavors: Drain any excess fat from the skillet. This step is important for both health and flavor, as it prevents the dish from becoming greasy. Then, add the minced garlic and ginger to the skillet, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic and ginger; they should be fragrant and slightly softened, not browned or blackened. Beginner Note: The aroma of the garlic and ginger will signal when they’re ready. This step adds a crucial layer of flavor to the dish.
  3. Season It Up: Stir in the soy sauce (or tamari), sesame oil, and chopped green onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the mixture to simmer for a couple of minutes, stirring occasionally, so the flavors can meld together and the sauce thickens slightly. Beginner Note: Taste the beef and adjust the seasonings as needed. Don’t be afraid to add a little more soy sauce, sesame oil, or pepper to suit your preferences.

Assemble the Bowl:

  1. Start with Rice: Spoon a generous amount of cooked rice into the bottom of your bowl. The rice acts as a bed for the flavorful ground beef and other toppings.
  2. Layer the Beef: Top the rice with the seasoned ground beef mixture. Be generous with the beef—it’s the star of the show!
  3. Add Veggies (Optional): If you’re using any additional vegetables, such as steamed broccoli, sliced bell peppers, sautéed spinach, or pickled vegetables, arrange them attractively on top or around the beef. Beginner Note: Adding vegetables not only boosts the nutritional value of your meal but also adds a variety of textures and flavors to your bowl.
  4. Garnish: Finish your masterpiece with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, chopped green onions, and any other toppings you prefer, such as kimchi, a fried egg, or sliced cucumber. Beginner Note: Toppings are the key to customizing your bowl and making it your own. Get creative and experiment with different combinations to find your favorites.
