Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105°F–110°F)
  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter (for brushing)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Optional: pinch of Italian seasoning

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add flour, salt, and softened butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead on a floured surface for 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
  • Punch down dough and divide into 10–12 equal portions.
  • Roll each into a 7-inch rope and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Bake breadsticks for 12–14 minutes or until golden.
  • Melt remaining butter and stir in garlic powder (and optional Italian seasoning).
  • Brush warm breadsticks with garlic butter before serving.

Notes

  • To make ahead, freeze shaped dough on trays, then transfer to freezer bags.
  • Bake directly from frozen, adding 2–3 minutes to baking time.
  • Pair with marinara or Alfredo sauce for dipping. These also make a great side to pasta or soup!
