  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box orange cake mix
  • 1 package (3.4 oz) vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp orange extract
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 container (8 oz) whipped topping or 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • Optional: additional zest or orange slices for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan or two 8-inch round pans.
  • In a large bowl, mix cake mix and pudding mix.
  • Add eggs, oil, water, orange extract, and zest. Beat on low speed for 30 seconds, then on medium for 2 minutes.
  • Pour batter into prepared pan(s).
  • Bake for 28–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool completely in pans on a wire rack.
  • In a separate bowl, beat cream cheese (or mix whipped topping with zest) until smooth.
  • Spread frosting evenly over the cooled cake.
  • Garnish with extra zest or orange slices if desired.
  • Chill for at least 1 hour before serving for best texture.

Notes

  • Swap whipped topping for cream cheese if you want a richer flavor.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Add a touch of orange gelatin powder to the frosting for extra zing.
