Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cake:
    • 1 box Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix (use all ingredients from the box)
  • For the Topping:
    • 14.3 oz Oreos
    • 12.8 oz Hot Fudge
    • 3.4 oz Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix
    • 1¾ cups Milk
  • For the Dirt:
    • 3.4 oz Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix
    • 1¾ cups Milk
    • 1 container Cool Whip
    • Hot Fudge & Oreos for optional topping

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake: Start by combining the chocolate fudge cake mix with the required ingredients as per the instructions on the box. Mix until smooth and well combined. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch pan and bake for 22 to 28 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready. Let the cake cool for about 10 minutes.
  • Make Holes in the Cake: Once the cake has cooled slightly, take the end of a wooden spoon or another round object and poke holes all over the top of the cake. These holes will allow the hot fudge sauce to seep in, creating a deliciously gooey texture.
  • Add Hot Fudge Sauce: Heat the jar of hot fudge sauce in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds, or until it is easy to stir and pour. Pour the entire jar of hot fudge over the cake, making sure to cover it completely. Allow the sauce to absorb into the cake while the cake continues to cool. Set aside a little hot fudge sauce for topping later.
  • Prepare the Pudding Layers: In a bowl, mix the first package of dark chocolate pudding with 1¾ cups of cold milk. Stir until the pudding begins to thicken. Before it sets completely, pour it evenly over the cooled cake, ensuring that it covers the surface well. Place the cake back in the fridge and allow the pudding to set for about 15 minutes.
  • Prepare the Dirt Layer: In a separate bowl, mix the second package of dark chocolate pudding with the remaining 1¾ cups of cold milk. Let this pudding set in the fridge. While waiting for the pudding to set, take a large Ziploc bag and crush ¾ of the bag of Oreos into small pieces using a rolling pin or heavy object.
  • Mix Cool Whip with Pudding: Once the pudding has set, take it out of the fridge and mix it with the Cool Whip until well blended and smooth. Then, fold in the crushed Oreos, creating the “dirt” layer that will top the cake.
  • Assemble the Dirt Pie: Spread the Oreo and Cool Whip mixture evenly over the pudding layer on the cake. Then, drizzle the reserved hot fudge sauce over the top and sprinkle with the remaining crushed Oreos.
  • Chill and Serve: Place the pie back in the fridge and allow it to chill for at least 20 minutes. The cake should be fully set, and the flavors will meld together beautifully. Cut the pie into squares and serve cold. Be sure to keep any leftover dirt pie refrigerated.

Notes

  • Substitutions: If you’re not a fan of dark chocolate pudding, you can substitute it with regular chocolate pudding. The taste will be equally delicious, though dark chocolate adds a slightly richer flavor.
  • For a Nuttier Crunch: Add crushed nuts like pecans or walnuts to the “dirt” layer to give the pie an extra crunch and depth of flavor.
  • Make it a Family Fun Activity: Let the kids help with crushing the Oreos or mixing the Cool Whip with the pudding. It’s a fun way to get everyone involved in making this irresistible treat.
  • For Extra Decadence: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or drizzle with more hot fudge sauce for an over-the-top dessert experience.
  • Switch the Base: While the cake mix provides a rich and fudgy base, you can substitute it with a brownie mix for a different texture and flavor.
