Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ⅓ cup green bell pepper, diced
  • ½ cup yellow onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Baking Sheet: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside. Preheating the oven ensures even cooking, and parchment paper prevents sticking.
  • Prepare the Garlic Bread: Slice the French bread in half lengthwise and place on the prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, add softened butter, garlic salt, and Italian seasoning. Mix until well combined. Evenly spread the garlic butter mixture over the two halves of bread. Spreading the garlic butter evenly ensures that each bite is flavorful.
  • Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook for 6-8 minutes or until browned, breaking up the ground beef with a spatula. Breaking up the ground beef ensures even cooking and prevents large clumps.
  • Add the Vegetables: Add the onions, green peppers, and garlic, and cook for 4-5 minutes or until they become soft. Then, drain off excess grease. Draining off excess grease prevents the filling from becoming greasy.
  • Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce: Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt, onion powder, and paprika. Stir until combined and simmer uncovered for 6-8 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Simmering the sauce allows the flavors to meld together and the sauce to thicken.
  • Assemble the Garlic Bread: Divide the Sloppy Joe mixture in half and top each loaf of garlic bread. Then, sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar cheese over the top of each loaf. Dividing the filling evenly ensures that each loaf is topped generously.
  • Bake: Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden brown. Baking until the cheese is melted and golden brown ensures that it is perfectly gooey.
  • Slice and Serve: Cut into pieces before serving and enjoy! Slicing before serving makes it easier to serve and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use softened butter.
  • Drain excess grease from beef.
